Bicycle Ambassador Program

The Rome Police Department is proud to introduce its Bicycle Ambassador Program β€” an innovative initiative designed to strengthen community relationships, enhance public safety, and support officers in keeping Rome a safe place to live, work, and visit.

What Is the Bicycle Ambassador Program?

Bicycle Ambassadors are trained, unarmed members of the Rome Police Department who assist with non-emergency, low-risk tasks. By handling these important but non-critical responsibilities, ambassadors allow sworn officers to focus on preventing crime, responding to emergencies, and addressing traffic and safety concerns.

This program also emphasizes community connection β€” ambassadors are approachable, visible, and accessible to residents and visitors throughout the city.

Rome's Bicycle Ambassadors may assist with:

  • Directing traffic during special events or minor accident scenes
  • Responding to non-emergency calls for service
  • Assisting with community problem-solving and neighborhood concerns
  • Providing directions, safety information, and general assistance to the public
  • Supporting police operations by transporting documents, managing equipment, and assisting with basic administrative tasks
  • Offering first aid and CPR assistance when needed

What Bicycle Ambassadors Cannot Do:

While Bicycle Ambassadors play a vital support role, they are not sworn officers. They do not:
  • Carry firearms
  • Make arrests
  • Detain suspects
  • Use force (except in self-defense)

Why It Matters for Rome

The Bicycle Ambassador Program helps the Rome Police Department:
  • Increase visibility in neighborhoods, downtown, parks, and trails
  • Build stronger community ties through daily, positive interactions
  • Free up sworn officers for high-priority public safety needs
  • Provide a welcoming presence at community events and in public spaces
