Transit Route Study 2025

How should Rome Transit evolve to meet the community’s changing mobility needs?

The City has embarked on formal process to identify residents’ transit wants and priorities while also identifying practical and sustainable strategies for addressing such needs. The two-part project is anticipated to last approximately eight months. The first part includes a thorough evaluation of the City’s long-standing fixed-route local bus service. At present this service features six routes, all of which operate Monday through Friday. Five routes operate on a one-hour frequency, from approximately 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. A sixth route links the Ashland Park apartments with the City’s downtown transit center (216 East First Street), offering four roundtrips each day.

The second part will consider the feasibility of creating a general public on-demand service similar to Uber or Lyft. Such a service could supplement the current local bus service by offering evening or Saturday service. Alternatively, it could operate on weekdays, providing service in portions of Rome or the Floyd County urbanized area not presently served by public transit.  For further details regarding the project visit RomeTransitStudy.com. 2025 Route Study FlyerSpanish Route Study Flyer 25

About RTD

On October 1, 1961, the Georgia Power Company gave the City of Rome all of its buses, and any spare parts and equipment that they had on hand. They also paid the City of Rome $300,000 that the City agreed to use specifically for the transportation system. With this, the City of Rome established the Rome Transit Department (RTD) to take over bus operations.

Today, RTD provides public transportation within the city limits of Rome, Georgia with 2 different services. RTD operates a Mainline Fixed Route Service and an on demand, curb to curb Para Transit Service.
