On October 1, 1961, the Georgia Power Company gave the City of Rome all of its buses, and any spare parts and equipment that they had on hand. They also paid the City of Rome $300,000 that the City agreed to use specifically for the transportation system. With this, the City of Rome established the Rome Transit Department (RTD) to take over bus operations.
Today, RTD provides public transportation within the city limits of Rome, Georgia with 2 different services. RTD operates a Mainline Fixed Route Service and an on demand, curb to curb Para Transit Service.
- Main Line Fixed Route - Operates 6 routes on an one-hour headway throughout the city. (Maps and guides can be found in the document section below.)
- RTD Mainline Routes and Stops (arcgis.com)
- Para-Transit Service - This is a Curb to Curb service for the Disabled and Elderly and operates up to 3/4 of a mile outside of our Fixed Route Services with the same operating hours. This service is available to all ADA eligible riders but requires submission and approval of a Para-Transit application. REASONABLE MODIFICATION POLICY
Effective July 13, 2015, transit providers are required under 49 CFR 37.5()(3) to make reasonable modifications in policies, practices, or procedures when the modifications are necessary to avoid discrimination disability or to provide program accessibility to their services.

Fares may be purchased at the Downtown Transit Station, the Transit Administrative Office, or from select operators using EXACT FARE only.
The City of Rome Transit Department is looking to restore fares in 2024.
What does this mean?
- At some point in the future Bus Fares will return. This means there will be a cost for bus service.
- This is not an immediate reinstatement. The start date for this is not yet set, but more information will follow. You will have more than 30 days’ notice before this starts. This is advanced notice to help prepare.
- The amount of the fare has not yet been determined but will be communicated soon.
- Those who have purchased Fare Cards can hold those cards until the end of the period. These will be honored when fares are reinstated.
- There will be the opportunity for a public hearing, and it will be posted on each bus as well as in the newspaper.
What happens until then?
- While details are being finalized, Transit Fare for Fixed-route and Public Paratransit will remain free.
- Updates in the process will be posted on the buses as well as the City of Rome website as they happen.
Those who have purchased Multi-ride Fare Cards purchased can hold those cards until the end of the period. These will be good to use as normal when fares are reinstated.

The City of Rome Transit Department is conducting a survey to assess additional transportation needs, regarding access to higher education facilities and employers off of U.S. Highway 27, Cedartown Highway. Beginning Monday, October 4th, 2021 and extended through Friday, December 30, 2022, the City of Rome Transit Department will be offering a temporary fare reduction to provide free Fixed Route Transit Service. Transit Director Kathy Shealy talks about the intent behind the change.
